Heart of Java: Borobudur

Photography, Travel

Yogyakarta (or Jogjakarta) is considered the 'cultural heart of Java'. Home to the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur, and a large Hindu temple compound, Prambanan, as well as the Sultan's palace, and plenty more amazing historical and cultural sites.

Borobudur is a Mahayana Buddhist Temple built in the 9th Century, completed circa AD 825. It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. The temple was designed by Gunadharma in Javanese Buddhist architecture, combining elements of indigenous Indonesian ancestor worship and the Buddhist concept of Nirvana.

Pawon Temple is a small Buddhist temple between the Borobudur and Mendut temples, it is related to these two temples as they were all built during the Sailendra dynasty (8th-9th centuries). Pawon is older than Borobudur, and is used as a place of meditation.
